National Preparedness Month - Make your plan! #NatlPrep

We talk about being prepared ALWAYS, how could we leave out the most important month of the year - National Preparedness Month. This month was bought about after the most terrifying incident of September 11, 2001 and also because this is a month of Hurricanes.

We have witnessed in the past where we ourselves or someone we know has suffered only because we did not plan for a disaster, be it a First Aid kit or Financial planning during times of peril.

This year's theme for National Preparedness Month is designed as a result of Hurricane Harvey wreaking havoc across. The first week of the month is dedicated to :

MAKE & PRACTICE YOUR PLAN

We have learned year after year the areas we live in are prone to natural disasters, the likes of snow storms, wild-fires, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes not bringing the man-made disasters into the picture, how prepared are we to face such issues?

Have you ever planned with your entire family on what their evacuation plan should be, is there a safe spot where you should expect all your family member to gather? Well, its never too late, START now!

And No, we are not just discussing Food & Water storage, let us take a look at some of the important things :

  • The number of people in the family.
  • Their dietary or medicinal needs on a daily basis
  • The number of children in the family
  • Pets in the household
Tips to strategize your plan:

  • Every member in the household should be part of the emergency preparation discussion.
  • Pick a safe spot for all your family members to meet in case you are far away.
  • Everyone should be aware of the basic necessities in times of an emergency.
  • Always have a Bug-Out-Bag ready with all essentials.
  • Subscribe to weather alerts based on the region you live in.

Think your preps will go for naught?

See light at the end of the tunnel and a happy outcome?

I'm sure you know plenty of folks out there who have not a worry or care about the big picture. Who don't even want to hear about all the threats piling up to our way of life and who laugh at the thought of wasting any time, energy, or money to try to prepare for tough times. It leaves each of us with a little dilemma ... do we use our own preps to try to save others when the time comes?

Bottom  line here--there are a whole lot of us who can see and hear the crisis barreling down on us like a high-speed freight train rounding the bend. We think, therefore we prep.

Ted Koppel's new book "Lights Out" available October 27

I recently received a review copy of a book by Ted Koppel (of Nightline fame) that will be on sale October 27. The title: "Lights Out: A Cyberattack, A Nation Unprepared, Surviving the Aftermath."

I was asked by the publisher to review the book and help get the word out if I liked it.

I have found the book to be critical reading for our times. In a nutshell, Koppel lays out the convincing case for a very likely and imminent cyber attack on America's electrical grid. When it happens, it will be devastating and an undeniable act of war.

This may not be news to most folks who read this blog or who are Safecastle customers, but the way Mr. Koppel does an excellent job of fact-based, authoritative, and time-sensitive reporting is eye-opening.

He goes beyond the expected risk overview. He adroitly moves to the general lack of governments' preparedness for this threat out there and then talks in some detail about the need for individual preparedness and how to survive what is coming.

This is not fiction. This a reporter's investigative report that confirms the need for individual preparedness and much more. Highly recommended for most any American today--prepper or not. If you're not into personal preparedness today, you will be after reading this book.

"Panic" Buying Expanding Throughout Preparedness Markets

We've been keeping you advised of this burgeoning situation for almost two months now. As a result many of you have stayed ahead of the curve.

Today, we're deep into a spreading panic among those prepping for imminent crises. The most popular brands and varieties of storage foods are out of stock and backordered most anywhere you look. Note that this situation is also now spreading to crucial survival-related products such as Berkey water filters.

The Good News

We know what we're doing at Safecastle, having been around this block many times before. We recognized the signs very early on this year and started a bit of focused buying ourselves to make sure we could help you through this situation. So while many other sellers are selling you long-backordered product, we've still got key product inventories in our warehouses. Maybe not a lot of each variety, but enough to get you squared away of you do not delay any longer.

For instance, we do still have about two-thirds of the Mountain House freeze dried catalog in stock for prompt shipping.

Red Feather canned butter and Bega canned cheese are about to disappear from U.S. markets. The North American distributor sold us their last pallets of those two very popular items and they don't expect to get resupplied from overseas for several months. (Apparently, this buying surge is taking place around the world.) Our butter inventory was depleted earlier today but we have that last shipment coming in and if you get your order in, you'll be in the queue for those dwindling can-cases. (And yes--they are still on sale at unbeatable pricing!) We expect that shipment in within two weeks. We do still have the cheese available for prompt shipping.

Yoders canned bacon--we still have some in stock for prompt shipping. It is out of stock most other places for at least the next few weeks.

Berkey water filters ... the N. American distributor is running out of stock of several Berkey models. We have inventory of several models ... if they are listed in our store, we have them available for fast shipping.

Many other storage food brands that we are selling are drop-shipped from their producer warehouses. The word on most of them is that they are shipping about three or more weeks out due to growing piles of orders that are coming in.

All food producers are dealing with amped-up demand, but they are also struggling to purchase raw ingredients for their products. Eggs remain the biggest challenge, with most factories unable to secure enough for production runs, and that is expected to remain the case for several more months.

Bottom Line

No surprise if you have been paying attention, but here is our take ... just as with the overall economy and geopolitical situation out there, we're on the edge in the crisis preparedness marketplace.

But where much of the economy is dragging, those who are stepping up their preparedness efforts are stressing our suppliers to the breaking point at the opposite end of spectrum. Many will say, that's not a bad thing.

The danger is that we are one big-picture push away from having the whole thing go tumbling down the slope. We've seen it before--sellers are unable to get inventory, producers are unable to get enough material and food for production runs. We're at max capacity right now ... if any number of new more preparedness buyers flood into the market, that will be it.

Upfront about the Situation

We prefer to make sure our own longtime customers are well situated for what is happening. We're upfront with you about what we are seeing so that you have as many facts available for your own consideration as to what you may want to do as a result.

Stay safe.

Preppers Shipping Advisory ... Want it by September 10?

We've been asked, and we fully understand the concern many might be having at this point ...

September of this year is full of question marks and red letter dates for preppers. It seems most of those dates occur after about Sept. 10.

So if you are looking for your Safecastle order to arrive by about September 10--please try to place your order by the end of August. That gives us and our suppliers and the shippers adequate time to process your order.

(There are exceptions--such as SurvivalCave meats, which sometimes require up to two weeks to deliver.)

Bottom line: we're fully on-board with the sense of urgency--please place your orders as early as possible. This month is already hugely busy and if it gets any more so as we get closer to September, supply inventories can be affected.

Market-Meltdown Wake-up Call from Safecastle

This is your wake-up call ... don't snooze
Markets melting down, systems failing, panic spreading

Getting right to the point--the slide toward anarchy may have begun. Global investors are in full retreat. Greece lit the fuse, China spilled the gasoline. Wall Street and the other financial centers around the world are in turmoil. Starvation and panic is already front and center in Greece. In Europe and in Asia, banks and brokerages are unable to help their clients. It's all spreading in rapid fashion and one does not need much imagination to realize what comes soon after the inevitable rioting in the streets.

From where we sit--we can tell you with certainty and experience what happens in the preparedness marketplace. Supplies are depleted in no time. Backorders stretch into months. Factories shutdown when raw materials become unavailable.

Bottom line--we can't promise we will be able to help you stock-up once the SHTF.

In the meantime, we ARE here, watching the news as closely as I'm sure you are, praying for the best, filling orders, making necessities available at the best prices we can swing.

Note that through July 15, we are still offering up some of our most popular products at extra steep discounts, while they remain available.

It's not the time to be comfortably numb!

A little stream-of-consciousness here ... based largely on what I am finding myself doing right now.

1.  There is a strong tendency right now to slide down in the swivel chair to just watch the markets and the global headlines. Maybe still denying internally that this might really be the beginning of the long-expected crash.

2.  Intellectually, it sure seems to fit the bill ... everything as it is now happening may in fact be accelerating downhill with little chance of it reversing course, even temporarily. The trick here may be to actually square up with that fact emotionally, calmly, with a focus on next steps.

3.  Not nearly the time yet to think bugging out or bunkering up, but to embrace the fact that at this point we are still ahead of the game in comparison to almost everybody else out in the meat world.

4.  So how to use that early advantage? That's the question of the day. The answer means something a bit different for each prepper, but this is that hoped-for early warning before TSHTF. Maybe.

Beware the Greek Canary! Watch and learn ... finish your preps now

The dominoes have begun to fall. It will be a relatively slow-motion cascade of crises from now through the next several weeks and mere handful of months.

The Greek default will turn out to be the trigger event that will cause not only a catastrophe in Greece, but will also quickly spread through much of Europe. The falling dominoes will ultimately criss-cross the globe, as the central banks fail to push the inevitable any further down the road.

Every day the news coverage will show the spreading fear and destruction, though some mainstream media outlets may try to keep it all on the low down.

Preppers Want a Warning Sign

Most folks have seen this coming for a long time, but we really have wanted a big flare in the sky or a warning shot across the bow to let us know that the expected collapse is imminent. Well consider this Greek debt default to be the early warning sign for your final preps if you are in North America.

Those in Europe--the urgency for you to make ready is great.

Astute and discerning preppers have already begun to move on this over the last 24 hours. If there is one thing I know it is the preparedness marketplace. This is already showing to be one of those rare events that will bring about panic buying of preps--particularly long-term storage food--to the point where suppliers will quickly have their warehouses emptied and customer waiting lists will stretch out for months.

I've been in the business for long enough that I have seen it happen two or three times. It hurts and it's frustrating. But it does happen and I put it today at about a 75% chance of happening again, starting this week.

Be forewarned. Stay safe.

Emergency Alerts. Did you know ?

EMERGENCY ALERTS

WEA Screen image of disaster text from the government displaying on a smart phone screen.
Visit the FEMA Library to downloadWEA PSA (:30)
View "WEA PSA (:30)" on Youtube.
You can receive important lifesaving alerts no matter where you are - at home, at school, or at work.
Public safety officials use reliable systems to alert you and your family in the event of natural or man-made disasters. Many communities also offer emergency alert notifications through their own systems.
  1. Why are Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) important to me?
Alerts received at the right time can help keep you safe during an emergency. With WEA, warnings can be sent to your mobile device when you may be in harm's way, without need to download an app or subscribe to a service.
  2. What are WEA messages?
Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) are emergency messages sent by authorized government alerting authorities through your mobile carrier.
  3. What types of alerts will I receive?
    • Extreme weather, and other threatening emergencies in your area
    • AMBER Alerts
    • Presidential Alerts during a national emergency
  4. What does a WEA message look like?
WEA will look like a text message. The WEA message will show the type and time of the alert, any action you should take, and the agency issuing the alert. The message will be no more than 90 characters.
  5. How will I know the difference between WEA and a regular text message?
WEA messages include a special tone and vibration, both repeated twice.
  6. What types of WEA messages will the National Weather Service send?
    • Tsunami Warnings
    • Tornado and Flash Flood Warnings
    • Hurricane, Typhoon, Dust Storm and Extreme Wind Warnings
  7. What are AMBER Alerts?
AMBER Alerts are urgent bulletins issued in the most serious child-abduction cases. The America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response (AMBER) Alert Program is a voluntary partnership between law-enforcement agencies, broadcasters, transportation agencies, and the wireless industry.
  8. Who will send WEAs to issue AMBER Alerts?
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), in coordination with State and Local public safety officials, sends out AMBER Wireless Emergency Alerts through IPAWS.
  9. What should I do when I receive a WEA message?
Follow any action advised by the message. Seek more details from local media or authorities.
  10. Will I receive a WEA message if I'm visiting an area where I don't live, or outside the area where my phone is registered?
Yes, if you have a WEA-capable phone and your wireless carrier participates in the program. (More than 100 carriers, including all of the largest carriers, do.)
  11. What if I travel into a threat area after a WEA message is already sent?
If you travel into a threat area after an alert is first sent, your WEA-capable device will receive the message when you enter the area.
  12. When will I start receiving WEA messages?
It depends. WEA capabilities were available beginning in April 2012, but many mobile devices, especially older ones, are not WEA-capable. When you buy a new mobile device, it probably will be able to receive WEA messages.
  13. Is this the same service public safety agencies have asked the public to register for?
No, but they are complementary. Local agencies may have asked you to sign up to receive telephone calls, text messages, or emails. Those messages often include specific details about a critical event. WEAs are very short messages designed to get your attention in a critical situation. They may not give all the details you receive from other notification services.
  14. Will I be charged for receiving WEA messages?
No. This service is offered for free by wireless carriers. WEA messages will not count towards texting limits on your wireless plan.
  15. Does WEA know where I am? Is it tracking me?
No. Just like emergency weather alerts you see on local TV, WEAs are broadcast from area cell towers to mobile devices in the area. Every WEA-capable phone within range receives the message, just like TV that shows the emergency weather alert if it is turned on. But, the TV stations, like WEA, don't know exactly who is tuned in.
  16. Will a WEA message interrupt my phone conversations?
No, the alert will be delayed until you finish your call.
  17. How often will I receive WEA messages?
You may get very few WEA messages, or you may receive frequent messages when conditions change during an emergency. The number of messages depends on the number of imminent threats to life or property in your area.
  18. If, during an emergency, I can't make or receive calls or text messages due to network congestion, will I still be able to receive a WEA message?
Yes, WEA messages are not affected by network congestion.
  19. What if I don't want to receive WEA messages?
You can opt-out of receiving WEA messages for imminent threats and AMBER alerts, but not for Presidential messages. To opt out, adjust settings on your mobile device.
  20. How will I receive alerts if I don't have a WEA-capable device?
WEA is only one of the ways you receive emergency alerts. Other sources include NOAA Weather Radio, news broadcasts, the Emergency Alert System on radio and TV programs, outdoor sirens, and other alerting methods offered by local and state public safety agencies.
